Experience with complicated cases.

Charles focuses his private practice on white collar criminal defense. His experience includes federal healthcare fraud, drug conspiracies, RICO allegations, and cases involving the prescribing of controlled substances. He has tried criminal cases to verdict and represented clients in both state and federal courts.

His work also extends to the civil lawsuits, regulatory disputes, and professional licensing issues that can accompany a criminal investigation. That breadth matters when a case puts a client’s freedom, livelihood, and professional reputation at risk at the same time.

A prosecutor’s perspective on the defense.

Charles previously served as an Assistant Solicitor General in Augusta-Richmond County and as a trial team lead in the solicitor’s office. That experience informs how he evaluates the government’s evidence, identifies weaknesses in a case, and prepares for the courtroom.

His background also includes civil and regulatory litigation with Hall Booth Smith and work as corporate general counsel. He has handled healthcare billing disputes, commercial litigation, employment contract disputes, and civil rights matters—experience that helps him understand the business and regulatory context behind complex criminal allegations.

An understanding of the business behind the case.

Before law school, Charles worked with local business owners as an account executive at WJBF-TV. He later built and operated his own law practice. Working with businesses from both perspectives has shaped his approach to financial records, business operations, and communication with accounting and other professional experts.

He places particular importance on careful research, clear writing, and helping clients understand the decisions they face. His approach is grounded in respect for the client and the family living through the case.

Rooted in Augusta.

Charles has called Augusta home since 1997 and is a graduate of Lakeside High School. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his law degree at the University of South Carolina. His community ties include the Church of the Good Shepherd, where he has served as a Sunday school teacher. His civil rights work has also included advocacy for children with disabilities.
